Come and stay with Corky and his lovely wife Raquel at their home on the beautiful tropical beach of La Saladita, Mexico.  Located just 35 minutes north of Ixtapa and 45 minutes north of Zihautanejo along Mainland Mexico’s most fertile surf coastline, right at one of the premier left hand point breaks in the world.  The home is beachfront, with a swimming pool, television, internet (bring a laptop) and three guest rooms available.  Two with King sized beds and one with either a King or two twins.  Bookings are available from one to six people per stay.  You are provided with lodging, all your meals and drinks, personal surf coaching one on one from Corky and pick up and drop off at the airport in Zihautanejo.  Let us know your eating and drinking preferences and we will customize your stay to insure you the perfect vacation.  The house staff will take incredible care of you. This is a very romantic setting and is a great destination for couples as well as surfers in search of a great surf adventure.  As options we can also arrange for massages, day trips to historical sites and other activities that are available in the area.  We also have a number of surfboards and SUP’s available for our guests at no extra charge.  This is a chance of a lifetime to hang out and surf with one of the true legends of surfing as well as experience one of the most beautiful and tranquil spots on the planet. It is an amazing trip for surfers and non-surfers alike.   For more information and rates contact Corky direct at CORKYSURF@AOL.COM

SOME COMMENTS FROM PREVIOUS GUESTS.

I just came back from my fifth trip to Corky’s.   Now I’m back at my desk job frequently distracted with memories of the week of great

surf I just scored and fantasizing about the next trip.  Five trips.  Different times of the year.  Never disappointed with the surf.  From

the moment of my excited arrival to the emotional departure I was in Corky and Raquel’s friendly and secure hands.  The family style meals, the people, the stories, the jokes, the dogs and cats and goat, the 80 degree water and of course the fantastic surf.  It really doesn’t get any better than this.

I have always experienced wonderful times on my surf trips to Corky’s.  From the time I am picked up from the airport to the time I am dropped off everything is taken care of by Corky and his staff.   Great surf, warm water, amazing food, Corkys custom drinks, comfortable private rooms, internet access, professional coaching and more is Corky’s way of saying Mi Casa Su Casa. At any level of surfing everyone will have a surf trip of a lifetime.

Creighton Bellman, Newport Beach, Ca.

Corky and Raquel are the perfect hosts to what, in my opinion, is the ultimate surf getaway.  Raquel is a fantastic cook and Corky is, well…. Corky.  There is none other.  He can improve your surfing with just a few words and make you laugh your head off with many.  It’s like staying with friends without the pressure of having to deal with what “they want to do.”  This trip is all about what “you” want to do.  I have come by myself, with my family and with a couple of pals.  Each time the adventure was fantastic.  Their massage girl, Hilda, is incredible.  The neighbor, Timoteo..”the Iguana” Dorsey is an adventure in himself…..you will love him.  This is an upscale surf trip for those who want something better.

Reggie Hopkins,  Tampa, Florida

Their home is beautiful, the food is to die for, the surf is incredible, the water is perfect, the vibe is tranquil and peaceful, there is everything you need right there and both my wife and I love it.  Corky taught my kids to surf and improved my skills in only a few days.  We plan on becoming regulars.

Larry Turnbull, Chino, Ca.

After one trip to Corky’s house I felt like part of the family.  After a dozen I know I am because if I misbehave he makes me sleep with the neighbors goat.  Raquel is wonderful and has the best hair in the world.  I keep a board there and try to make it at least two to four times a year.  You can get in more turns on one wave at that spot than you can in a whole month in Huntington Beach.

Bruce Romano.  Huntington Beach, Ca.

It was the best trip we ever had, anywhere.  It is sort of like if you were a golfer and got to spend a week at Arnold Palmers house.  What would you pay to hang with Arnie, play golf everyday with him and get pointers?  And on top of that have his wife cook for you every night and listen to stories about golf that would blow your mind.  This is like that for a surfer.  Corky is a very fun dude and his wife is not only beautiful but really a sweet person.  We became instant friends with both of them.

SURFING ELOQUENCE PART 3

SURFING ELOQUNECE PART 3

By Corky Carroll

Continuing with my series on surf terminology this week, after getting side-tracked for a couple weeks like I tend to do all the time, we pick up our exciting journey down the surfing alphabet on the letter F.  For those of you who don’t surf you can use this stuff to semi effectively communicate with your surfing friends.

FROTHING:  this is what you do after getting a great ride or when you are checking out an extremely hot babe.  Also used to describe a giant wave that is just getting ready to break on you.

FUDGE TUNNEL:  any break that has extremely dirty water.

FUNBOARD:  a midsized surfboard usually used for small surf as it is very easy to ride.

GEEK:  one of many terms used to describe one who lacks the surfular, cultural and social skills of those of us who are of a higher pedigree of human being.

GLASSED OFF:  also called “glassy.”  This describes a condition when there is no wind blowing and the ocean is as “smooth as glass.”  This is also a term used by the “Iguana” and myself to describe our condition when we are watching the sunset from my deck and are on our first evening tequila.  We are “glassing off.”

GNARLY:  something extremely heavy or serious.  Also used simply as “gnar.”  As in “whoa dude, that bone crushing wipe out was totally gnar!”

GOING OFF:  when a surf break or an individual is experiencing excellence.  “The pier is really going off!”

GOOFYFOOT:  someone who stands with their right foot forward.  Left foot forward is Regular Foot.  There is lore on how this all got started leading all the way back to a Disney cartoon back in the 1930’s that showed Goofy surfing with his right foot forward.

GREMLIN:  this is used to describe a young and small surfer.  In recent years the Aussies have sort of messed this up by introducing the term “grom,” short for grommet, that has more than less take over.  A grem and a grom are the same thing.

GROVEL:  this is the act of struggling in one way or another.  “Larry is really groveling in the shorebreak today.”  Or “Larry went groveling back to LuLu after she gave him the foot.”

GUN:  a big wave surfboard.  Long and drawn in towards the tail to hold in on giant waves.

HAMMERED:  the act of getting slammed in one way or another.  “Geeze, Freddie really got hammered on that one!”

HANG TEN:  a longboarding move where the surfer walks to the nose of the board and hangs all ten of his toes over the nose.  This is better than hanging 5.

HAOLE:  this is good term to know and understand when you travel to Hawaii.  It is there local term for “white person.”  It is used in a negative way most of the time, but not always.  But if you hear some big gnarly Hawaiian dude yell over to you, “Hey Haole…….,”  it could be a good idea to beat it outta there quickly.  That is usually followed by, “you like beef?”  And trust me when I tell you that he is NOT asking you if you wanna come over to dinner.

EDDIE

EDDIE

By Corky Carroll

One day last month I was checking out my page on facebook and saw that somebody had posted that the “Eddie” was being broadcast live via the internet.  The Eddie is officially called the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau.  It is the most prestigious big wave surfing event in the world.  Everybody calls it simply “the Eddie.”

A few minutes later I found myself glued to the laptop watching guys pulling off great moves on giant waves.  Heavy late drops especially.  Kelly Slater was great and really showed how a true professional attacks a competition.  I thought he had it won until the last heat when Greg Long totally went off and pulled off the come from behind win.  Fantastic surfing in fantastic surf.  That is what the Eddie is all about.

This event started back in 1984/85 at Sunset Beach.  Then Quiksilver got involved and moved it to Wiamea Bay in 1986/87.  I was a judge that year.  The clear winner was Eddie’s little brother Clyde Aikau.  It was one of those real warm and fuzzy moments to see Clyde and his dad, Sol, hugging with teary eyes when it was announced that Clyde had won.  I had tears in mine too, it was a true Hallmark moment.

Eddie Aikau was one of the true great big wave riders of the 1960’s and 70’s.  He had a great style and was totally fearless.  The benchmark phrase in big wave surfing to determine fear factor is “Eddie would go!”  And trust me, that bar is set very very high.  I have heard that said when I thought it was pretty insane.  But then, most of the time it was true, Eddie would have gone.   He was also a lifeguard on the North Shore, mostly at Wiamea Bay.  He saved countless lives in conditions that would have seemed impossible.  This dude had the skills, the style and the mind set.  He was a classic big wave surfer in every sense of the word.

I first met Eddie when I spent the summer of 1963 on the south shore of Oahu surfing Ala Moana and the Waikiki area.  We were both young up and comers and got to be friends.  One night I was invited over to dinner at his house and I have always remembered how wonderful his family was to me.  He had the classic Hawaiian family situation.  Everybody stuck together and it was a really loving and nurturing clan.  During the winters they would all go out to the North Shore together and camp out at Sunset Beach.  When they all got in the family truck to go someplace they would strap Eddies mom on the roof in her rocking chair because she loved the wind in her face.  It was wonderful to be driving along and see them coming the other way.  Whole family in the truck, boards and all and mama on the roof with a huge smile on her face.

Eddie went on to redefine big wave surfing in the mid to late 1960’s.  Along with the legendary Mike Doyle, Eddie was one of the first to truly perform on big surf at Wiamea Bay.  There were big name’s before him but for the most part they survived it more than really surfed it.  Eddie would fade deep and pull off these huge beautiful bottom turns and pull way high on the face.  It seemed that he was always under control.  He was one of those dudes who was also fun to surf with.  Always had a smile and was quick to laugh at something.  And he would give you a wave now and then too, a lost art in todays dog eat everything surfing culture.  I really enjoyed Eddie and his whole family.  Sol worked as the beach coordinator on all the surfing events in Hawaii for years and years, he was the best.

Eddie died in 1978 in an attempt to rescue the crew aboard a capsized catamaran off of the island of Maui, where he was born.

All these memories of Eddie and surfing the North Shore came rushing back as I was sitting there glued to my laptop watching the “Eddie.”  I guess that is why they named the event “In Memory of…”  Thanks to Quiksilver for that, a beautiful choice.  He deserves to be remembered.  There were great surfers like Buzzy Trent, George Downing and Mike Doyle who laid the groundwork for Eddie, but it was Eddie who took it to a whole ‘nother dimension.
